Earth sciences are applied sciences, but not fundamental sciences

Applied science is the application of existing scientific knowledge to practical applications, like technology or inventions [wikipedia].

My opinion: Any method for the separation of minerals has two criteria: the cost of the process and profit. If there is no profit, then nothing needs to be done.
