Critical review to the article "Determination of average flotation rate constants on the results of testing"

Critical review to the article "Determination of average flotation rate constants on the results of testing" of the author: Ph.D. Vladimir Z. Kozin. Ural State Mining University, Ekaterinburg, Russia. Proceedings of the international scientific-practical conference "Scientific bases and practice of processing of ores and technogenic raw materials." May 21-26, 2007.

The purpose of the article is the author's desire to refute the well-known fact. To quote the author: "It is usually assumed that at the beginning of flotation when t→0 (flotation time), we can get almost monomineral concentrates. It turns out that this is not so."

Further, the author cited some calculations. He made a blunder, because he substituted incorrect values of parameters in the formula (content of the valuable component in the ore). As a result, V. Kozin got incorrect result and he made a false conclusion (look at the formula).
Thus, the Ph.D. Vladimir Z.  Kozin misled the scientific world and he replaced the calculations in order to prove his baseless theory.
Deliberately V. Kozin did it or accidentally, we don't know.

In practice of flotation, there are cases of production of a finished copper concentrate at the head of the process, the so-called "copper head". Thus, the "Kozin theory" belies the real facts and contradicts with flotation practice.

The author laments: "The real methods for determining the flotation rate constants don't exist." It is not true. Methods exist, but it is complex and useless.

Flotation rate constant is a fictional figure, is a half-measure. It doesn't allow to see the full picture of the process and it is practically useless. Its purpose is only to demonstrate the existence of some scientific results of routine experiments, in the absence of actual scientific findings, a real scientific novelty. It is time to stop this not a useful tradition.

Only people who are late for modern science, they measure and compare "flotation rate constants" today.

To date, there are: universal equation of flotation kinetics and also formula for the direct calculation of the flotation velocity (rate). These mathematical tools allow you to describe adequately the kinetics and dynamics of the flotation process. Thus you can see and use directly the current value of the flotation velocity at each time point.

If we compare such modern mathematical tools and "flotation rate constant" then it is possible to draw an analogy with two cars: one of which has precise speedometer with recording of speed values (direct mapping of speed at any given time); another car has only a ribbon tied on the top of antenna by which you can indirectly judge the speed ("speed constant"). What car is better for you? Any comments are simply unnecessary.

Thus, the need to identify "flotation rate constant" is disappeared.
I believe that the approach to the flotation kinetics as a study of "flotation rate constant" (or "flotation rate coefficients") is inefficient and outdated. Therefore, this V. Kozin's article doesn't present a scientific interest and practical.

On the contrary, this article is harmful, because it contains errors and false information. Many professionals may go by wrong way by reading this article.
